General Counsel

Americares General Counsel Monica Barber oversees the organization’s global legal, compliance, enterprise risk management and internal audit functions. In this role, she is responsible for enhancing the corporate compliance program, helping to stand up the internal audit function and building and implementing a legal and compliance strategy that aligns with the organization’s strategic plan.

Barber brings over 20 years of legal and compliance expertise to Americares, having served in a wide range of industry sectors such as technology, manufacturing and financial services.

Prior to joining Americares in 2023, Barber served as associate general counsel for CARE USA, including serving as the legal advisor for the Middle East/North Africa and West Africa country offices. She also served as general counsel and chief compliance officer at AMI US Holdings, Inc. where she established the global legal and compliance department. Barber was also a senior attorney at John Deere for nearly a decade focused on international supply chain, transportation, logistics, international trade and corporate compliance. She also held legal and compliance roles at NCR Corporation and Whitney National Bank.

At Americares, Barber is also a member of the senior Leadership Team, which supports the CEO in implementing the strategy and achieving the mission of the health-focused relief and development organization.

Barber earned a bachelor’s degree in mathematics from Southern University at New Orleans in Louisiana, a law degree from Southern University Law Center in Louisiana, and an Executive Master of Business Administration from Emory University’s Goizueta Business School in Georgia.
