Stamford, Conn. – Aug. 22, 2025 – In response to the devastating flooding that has caused widespread destruction and loss of life in northwest Pakistan, Americares is offering assistance to local organizations working in the flood-affected areas to meet the immediate health needs of survivors, including displaced families. The health-focused relief and development organization has an emergency response expert based in Pakistan working with local organizations to assess the most urgent health needs, mobilize critical medicines and medical supplies and help to ensure survivors have access to urgently needed health care.
The floods, triggered by monsoon rains and sudden cloudbursts, have killed nearly 400 people in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and that number is expected to rise across the region as search and rescue efforts continue. At the same time, authorities have rescued over 25,000 people, however, continued monsoon conditions throughout September may severely impact rescue operations and leave communities isolated and vulnerable.
“We know that after disasters of this magnitude, there is an increased risk of water-borne diseases and other illnesses as families are forced to evacuate and stay in temporary shelters,” said Americares Director of Emergency Response Mariel Fonteyn. “We are prepared to support survivors as this crisis continues to unfold.”
Americares is also prepared to support the rehabilitation of damaged health facilities in the hardest-hit communities, procure medicines for health facilities that may have lost their stocks in the floods and provide hygiene kits and other basic necessities for survivors.
Americares has been providing assistance to Pakistan since 1990, delivering medicine, medical supplies and relief items in response to emergencies.
Americares responds to more than 35 natural disasters and humanitarian crises worldwide each year, establishes long-term recovery projects and brings preparedness programs to communities vulnerable to disasters. At the same time, the organization maintains a constant state of readiness so that it can deploy quickly when disaster strikes. Americares relief workers are among the first to respond to emergencies, helping to restore health services for survivors. After disasters, the organization often stays for months—or years—helping communities recover.
