Stamford, Conn. – March 29, 2025 – Americares is deploying an emergency response team to Thailand to respond to the deadly 7.7-magnitude earthquake that struck Myanmar yesterday, which has killed at least 1,600 people and injured thousands more, according to local officials. The powerful quake was also felt in Thailand, where it toppled a skyscraper that was under construction in Bangkok, claiming several lives and trapping others under the rubble. The death toll is expected to rise as search and rescue operations continue.
The team, which will be headed to Bangkok, is expected to deploy this weekend. Once on the ground, they will be coordinating with international and local partners to assess the most urgent health needs, mobilize critical medical supplies, support frontline health workers and first responders and ensure survivors have access to urgently needed health care.
“Our hearts go out to all who have been impacted by this devastating earthquake,” said Americares Deputy Senior Vice President of Emergency Programs Provash Budden. “The scale of destruction is staggering—entire communities have been reduced to rubble, homes have been leveled and health facilities have been severely damaged or destroyed. With medical needs rising by the hour, our priority is to get critical medicines and supplies to health workers and clinics caring for survivors.”
At the same time, the health-focused relief and development organization is prepared to send shipments of urgently needed medicines and relief supplies, including IV fluids, hygiene kits, wound care products and lifesaving chronic disease medications, to supply health workers treating survivors. Americares is also prepared to provide emergency funding to partner organizations working on the ground to help restore services quickly and efficiently for survivors.
Americares has a long history of responding to earthquakes all over the world, including the 2023 earthquake that struck Türkiye and Syria, the 2022 earthquake in Afghanistan, the 2015 Nepal earthquake, the 2010 and 2021 earthquakes in Haiti and the 2004 Indian Ocean earthquake and tsunami.
Americares responds to more than 35 natural disasters and humanitarian crises worldwide each year, establishes long-term recovery projects and brings preparedness programs to communities vulnerable to disasters. At the same time, the organization maintains a constant state of readiness so that it can deploy quickly when disaster strikes. Americares relief workers are among the first to respond to emergencies, helping to restore health services for survivors. After disasters, the organization often stays for months—or years—helping communities recover.
Donations to Americares Myanmar-Thailand Earthquake Fund will support its response to this devastating earthquake.
