Americares Responds to Philippines Earthquake

Stamford, Conn. – Oct. 1, 2025 – Americares Philippines is responding to the powerful 6.9-magnitude earthquake that struck off the coast of Cebu province at about 10 p.m. local time on Tuesday, just days after back-to-back typhoons struck the region.

Local authorities have reported at least 69 deaths from the earthquake near Bogo City in northern Cebu in the Visayas region of the Philippines. Search and rescue efforts are complicated by aftershocks, landslides, blocked roads and power outages.

Americares is deploying a team of 14 emergency response experts based in the Philippines to deliver tents and medicine and provide psychological first aid to survivors. The global health and disaster relief organization is planning to supply essential medicines—including antibiotics and medications for diabetes and hypertension—for up to 1,400 patients. The team is continuing to assess health needs in affected areas and will coordinate additional support as needed.

At the same time, Americares Philippines continues to respond to the health impacts of Super Typhoon Ragasa, which struck the Philippines on Sept. 22, with a response team operating out of Bogo City distributing hygiene kits.

“This powerful earthquake hit communities in Cebu province that were already reeling from the destruction caused by back-to-back typhoons,” said Americares Deputy SVP of Emergency Programs Provash Budden. “Americares is focused on providing urgently needed relief supplies and mental health support to meet survivors’ most immediate needs.”

When the earthquake hit, an Americares Philippines emergency response team was on the ground in Bogo City, distributing relief supplies after Super Typhoon Ragasa, locally known as Nando.

Americares has been providing assistance to the Philippines—one of the most disaster-prone countries—for more than 20 years. Americares established a base of operations in Manila after Typhoon Haiyan in 2013 to be able to respond more quickly to disasters and strengthen health care for families in need. The Americares Philippines team also provides ongoing support to local health centers, which are often the only source of care for thousands of people.

Americares responds to more than 35 natural disasters and humanitarian crises worldwide each year, establishes long-term recovery projects and brings preparedness programs to communities vulnerable to disasters. Americares relief workers are among the first to respond to emergencies, helping to restore health services for survivors. After disasters, the organization often stays for months—or years—helping communities recover.

Donations to Americares Philippines Disaster Relief Fund will support its response to the earthquake and other emergencies. To donate, go to www.americares-sampler.materiell.net/Philippines
