Stamford, Conn. – Sept. 2, 2025 – Americares is responding to the deadly 6.0-magnitude earthquake that rocked eastern Afghanistan just before midnight local time on Sunday.

Local authorities report over 1,400 people have died and thousands more are injured. The death toll is expected to rise as communication from the impact zone improves and strong aftershocks continue in the region, including a 5.2-magnitude earthquake that struck earlier today, according to the U.S. Geological Survey.

The health-focused relief and development organization is prepared to provide emergency funding to partner organizations working in the region to help restore health services in the hardest-hit areas. Americares is also prepared to provide hygiene kits and other basic necessities for survivors.

“This earthquake struck a remote and mountainous area of Afghanistan and has dealt a massive blow to families that were already struggling to cope with a lack of basic necessities, including access to health services,” said Americares Deputy SVP of Emergency Programs Provash Budden. “Afghanistan has suffered multiple natural disasters in recent years compounded by years of conflict and crises that has affected over 23 million people. Right now, we’re focused on meeting the most urgent health needs of earthquake survivors to help them recover during this incredibly difficult time.”

Americares has a long history of responding to earthquakes all over the world, including the 2022 and 2023 earthquakes in Afghanistan, the 2023 Türkiye and Syria earthquake, the 2015 Nepal earthquake, the 2010 and 2021 earthquakes in Haiti and the 2004 Indian Ocean earthquake and tsunami. Americares has been providing assistance to Afghanistan since 1986, delivering medicine, medical supplies and relief items. Americares responds to more than 35 natural disasters and humanitarian crises worldwide each year, establishes long-term recovery projects and brings preparedness programs to communities vulnerable to disasters.
