A powerful 6.9 magnitude earthquake struck near Bogo City in northern Cebu, in the Visayas region of the Philippines, on September 30, 2025. The quake collapsed buildings, damaged roads, triggered landslides and power outages and resulted in at least 76 deaths. Hospitals in the worst-hit zones, including Bogo City, were overwhelmed in the immediate aftermath and rescue efforts were complicated by aftershocks, landslides, rain and blocked roads.
Americares Philippines is responding, providing health centers and survivors with essential medicine, medical staff, psychological services, hygiene supplies and clean water.
In the first three weeks after the disaster, Americares medical teams have provided medical consultations to hundreds of survivors, including mental health and psychosocial support to over 500 children and psychological first aid to health care providers. For survivors living outside their damaged and unsafe homes, Americares has provided tents and distributed clean water, hygiene kits, tarps and water containers. Americares Philippines also provided surge medical staff to support the Bogo City Health Center as well as a tent and generator to increase access to health services. In all, Americares has supported six health centers throughout the affected region.
Americares will continue to support health needs throughout the area, including coordinating additional shipments of medicine and supplies and addressing mental health, water and hygiene needs..
At the same time, Americares Philippines continues to respond to the health impacts of Super Typhoon Ragasa, which struck the Philippines on Sept. 22 and the earthquake that struck in the Mindanao region of the Philippines on Oct. 9.
