On August 31, 2025, a powerful 6.0 magnitude earthquake struck Nangarhar Province, Afghanistan, near the Pakistan border northeast of Jalalabad. The shallow quake and strong aftershocks were felt widely across neighboring provinces and in Kabul, Afghanistan’s capital city. Local authorities report over 1,400 people have died and thousands more are injured, with the death toll expected to rise as emergency teams gain access to remote mountain communities cut off by landslides and rockfalls. The earthquake has caused severe damage to homes, infrastructure and roads, making search and rescue operations extremely challenging. Americares is responding, planning to provide hygiene kits and other basic necessities for survivors, many of whom have lost everything; Americares is also prepared to provide emergency funding to partner organizations working in the region to help restore health services in the hardest-hit areas.
